What every individual should know prior to purchasing a classic:
There is much wide spread misinformation in the market place regarding classic modern furniture and their properties. The most common issue regards the licensing of the products with originals vs. reproductions, vs. "knock- offs". It is important to note that many of the classic designs were never licensed to begin with or the licenses have long since expired thus placing many of these items within the U.S. market into the realm of "Public domain". Most of the originals of these items have become part of permanent museum collections or sell regularly at auction worldwide.
Far beyond that, even within the realm of "Public Domain" there is still a widespread fluctuation in pricing for the same item in the market place. There are two variables that control this fluctuation. The first variable is the rigidity with which the original specifications are being adhered to. The original specifications meaning the overall dimensions, width, depth, height, the diameter of the steel tubing, be it chrome-plated or otherwise and the finish material being, belting leather, fabric, etc…. The second variable, and most importantly, setting aside for the moment the original specifications and assuming that these are a given, it is the adherence to the original standards that fluctuate the price within the market place and make all the difference.
For example, a classic reproduction piece can adhere exactly to the original specifications (i.e. Overall dimensions, steel tubing then chrome plated, etc…) but not necessarily adhere to the original standards in that you can have an item that was originally designed to have steel tubing of a set diameter, lets say 1 ½" diameter and that that same steel tubing should be chrome plated, also that steel tubing has a specific gage (weight). Maybe the steel tubing is continuous in some parts, the way the corners are soldered and filed down is meticulous, the leather has set seams in certain places, and the foam used is of a specific density. In the end, although an item had its own original standards, it is the interpretation and implementation of these standards that fluctuate the price greatly, and can make the price for what appears to be the exact same item, vary from $500 to $1,500.
The true questions should be, when it is steel tubing, what is the gage of the steel tubing? If it is chrome-plated, how many coats (or microns) of chrome are there? Is it a single coat of chrome-plating or three? The foam within the piece, what type of foam or density is it? You can buy a piece of foam for $20 a square foot or $50 a square foot. The same applies to the leather, what is the quality of the leather? Is it aniline dyed, or is it pigmented leather?
Two items may appear the same, but upon close inspection one can be considerably lighter in weight than the next, the leather quality may be poor, the soldering and chrome quality is not pristine, and when in fact these two items are placed next to each other their differences are palpable. All of the above will make all the difference in the world in you enjoying an item for the short-term or for a life time of use. A true reproduction must adhere to both the original specifications and the standards. It should be said that some details have changed over the years but only due to manufacturing technological advances.
